Over 1300 people viewed the 207 quilts at the 16th annual Best Little Quilt Show in Texas Feb. 22 and 23 at the Fayette County Fairgrounds, La Grange, TX. The show, with the theme “Lions, Tigers, and Bears…Oh, My!”, attracted visitors from 231 towns and 9 states other than Texas.
Best of Show went to Betty Schmidt with her “Feathered Star”.
All visitors to the quilt show can vote for their favorite quilt; all guild members can vote for their favorite guild quilt. The votes are tallied at the end of the show. “Flowers by Madison” by Jeri Lafferty of Swiss Alp, TX, was the 2013 People’s Choice. The 2013 Guild Choice was “Feathered Star” by Betty Schmidt of La Grange.
Jan Romeis, from the Kingwood Area Quilt Guild, won “Trellis”, the 2013 Raffle Quilt, chaired by Kathi Babcock and Debbie Gabler.
Children 12 and under are encouraged to play the I Spy game. Winners are drawn from all the completed lists. Hailey Bridwell of Tomball, TX, won the Lion pillow and Lucy Osborn of Round Rock, TX, won the Clifford the Dog Quilt, made by guild member Mary Reeves.
This year, the guild held a Holiday Quilt Challenge. Members made quilts that reflected their favorite holiday. Debbi Gabler’s “Witches” took the Judge’s Choice award in this category.
During the past year, the guild lost 3 members, Nancy Longwell, Pflugerville, TX; Carol Katz, La Grange, TX; and Nancy Goerner, Smithville, TX. A Memorial exhibit, under the direction of Vickie Vogel, with photos, quilts, and memorabilia, paid tribute to these ladies and their love of the fiber arts.
